Texture analysis is a part of fast-growing methods for advanced evaluation of radiological images using an improving computer power (machine learning). There is a whole subfield in radiology called RADIOMICS which cover all computer-guided the image analyses.
The aim of the thesis will be the development of the new methods based on GLCM (grey-level co-occurrence matrix) analysis for using in the musculoskeletal MRI. The GLCM features will be used for searching the correlation with osteoarthritis (OA) prediction which can develop either after injuries (cartilage lesion, meniscus and ligament tear) or with aging. The methods should be subsequently expanded to other important tissues to search for degeneration markers in meniscus, ligaments and tendons. The data to analyze will be acquired either from the world-wide database of OA data (OA Initiative), or directly from the modern MRI machines at Institute of Measurement Science of Medical University of Vienna. The requirements for successful thesis is the passion for programming (Matlab, C++, Python) and biology/medicine.
