Multimodal imaging
In 2022 The department of optoelectronic measurement methods of the ÚM SAS was actively involved in solving the problem of multimodal imaging as part of international cooperation, focusing mainly on the fields of biology, paleontology, cultural heritage, mineralogy, and also on material and forensic science. This year, the SAV Measurement Institute participated in the solution of the international project COST CA17121 “Correlated Multimodal Imaging in Life Sciences (COMULIS). Within multimodal imaging, the research team developed both two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging methods. In the framework of 2D imaging methods, infrared reflectography, induced ultraviolet fluorescence and X-ray radiography were developed, especially for their use in the testing of cultural heritage artifacts. We presented our results to a wide international public through a video at the world exhibition EXPO 2022 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Within the framework of 3D imaging methods, we have successfully developed imaging methods using X-ray microtomography with use in the field of material research of high-temperature superconductors based on MgB2 [1], in the field of paleontology in 3D microCT imaging of Mesozoic insects in amber [5], in biology in imaging and comparative anatomy skeletons of legless reptiles [3], in mineralogy when imaging different phases in minerals [4] and in forensic science when imaging and measuring tooth and bone loss under the action of concentrated acid [2]. The results were published in 2022 in a total of five quarantined journals.
