Non-destructive methods of cultural heritage testing

(Investigators M. Hain, J. Bartl, V. Jacko)

The results of the research of the Department of Optoelectronic Measurement Methods were applied in cooperation with the restorers of the Levoča Regional Restoration Studio during a non-destructive physical survey of eight Gothic panel paintings of the Altar of the Four Sts. John of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Of St. James in Levoča. The aim of the optical non-destructive survey was to determine the presence and visibility of underdrawings, painted texts and hidden signatures using IR reflectography, identification of later interventions and possible retouching into paintings using the UV fluorescence method. The results of non-destructive testing are extremely important in determining the authenticity of a work and determining the correct procedures for its restoration.
